Scope for private investment in schools in Ghana

Most of the times i have been writing on the scope for private tertiary institutions in Ghana and other African countries, but recently during a discussion with few education stakeholders, they prompted me to do a preliminary report on scope for school education in Ghana. I grabbed this opportunity and analysed some of the published data on school education in Ghana to make my inferences. Below are some of the findings with my interpretation for the scope of private investment in primary schools in Ghana. For a comparative study, i have used data for Uganda also in some of my tables. Why Not Ghana?

As we witness the start of 2016 today, I am sure all of us in the education sector in Ghana would have done their analysis of business performance for 2015, which was affected by Ebola, impact of low oil prices on the economy, currency devaluation across Africa and many other factors which were not in an institution’s control. One of the major factor which impacted university enrollments across Ghana was turbulence in Nigerian economy. Scope for new Higher Education Institution in Ghana

Ghana has one of the most promising higher education sectors in Africa, with a significant contribution from private sector. With more than 400,000 students enrolled in the higher education institutions (HEI), country has seen a phenomenal growth in the number of private HEIs in last one decade. In the year 2016-2017 itself number of accredited private tertiary institutions increased to 85 as compared to 75 during the year 2015-2016. This is as per the most recent report on accredited tertiary institutions released by NAB on 12th April 2017. One of the most interesting fact to note from the report is that during 2016, twelve (12) new accredited private HEIs were approved by NAB to offer tertiary programs. This gives an indication that there are scope for new HEIs in the country, propelled both by the increase in demand for tertiary education by local students and selection of Ghana as a destination for higher education by other African nationals.
